Interfaith Dialogue Meeting with Adelaide Young Christian Workers (YCW)

Recently, a small group of young people from different religious and non-religious backgrounds, including Islam, Christianity (Catholic), Hinduism, Buddhism and other personal faith systems gathered to participate in an interfaith discussion night organised by Adelaide Young Christian Workers (YCW). The discussion night stemmed from the idea to promote interfaith harmony and for us as young people to explore our faith, beliefs, spirituality, values and perspectives in a relaxed and respectful atmosphere. As a participant, I’d like to share a small reflection on this activity.

With three major religious groups having just finished seasons of fasting, the conversation began with some sharing about some participants experiences of fasting and the significance of events including Ramadan and Easter. It was interesting to touch upon the diverse routes of thinking that lead to fasting from many faith traditions and other philosophies and backgrounds; from being motivated by a desire to strengthen one’s connections to one’s Creator, to concern for the environment, and ethical concerns about eating meat and animal products.

As could be expected, there were many unexpected turns to the conversation, including a questioning of religious structures and exploring the historic links between religions, especially the three Abrahamic religions. It was powerful in breaking misconceptions of different religions, as we had the chance to ask one another questions and clarify understandings. Ultimately, I think the highlight was coming to a place of understanding of the values that all participants held in common. As a group, we labelled these ‘human values’, and it was really humbling and affirming to come to a place of respect for all faith traditions and positions, acknowledging the essence of truth and goodness in each of these different pathways. The conversation was powerful in creating an openness towards faith and moving beyond labels.

Although it feels as though we just skimmed the surface of a vast and deep area to explore, it really was enriching to have the opportunity to personally connect and undertake this dialogue with each of the participants. As we are all on a spiritual journey, it was both beautiful and mind-opening to have a space to talk and discuss such things that are deeply personal, and I would like to thank everyone who came for their courage to take part in the dialogue with curiosity, honesty and open-mindedness, and for making it such a rewarding experience.
